Woah. We’re already six months into 2016, which also means we’re six months into our new year’s resolutions. Did you set any? How are you doing with them? According to Forbes, only 8% of people actually succeed with their resolutions [source]. To remedy this, the suggestion is to make your resolutions simple, achievable, and tangible.
I set multiple “resolutions” in January. I have health, wealth, social self, personal growth, and service goals.
Within each of these categories, I’ve broken down tangible achievements. Some of them are totally doable and others are a bit more aspirational (promotion is unlikely!). I’ve done exactly what Forbes suggested and have achieved at least 50% of them by now.
That said, I came to a realization last week that’s caused me to rethink my goals.
Forbes’ suggestion is total crap.
Stay with me here. It’s not that I am anti-goal setting or anything like that. I’ve made some progress, grown so much, and succeeded in the first half of 2016. But I’m still throwing these goals out and starting over.
All my goals were set based on the person I was in January 2016-not the person I want to be at the end of the year. I limited myself by believing that only things within reach, things possible with my current capabilities, strengths, and skills, were possible.
It’s funny, isn’t it?
By setting goals that are tangible and realistic, I inherently shrink my realm of possibilities. Why should I be happy with just getting certified as a personal trainer? I should ASSUME I already am certified, what’s next? Have 100 clients? Launch an online business? These are the kinds of goals I am now setting.
Don’t set goals based on where you. Set them based on where you want to be.
So I challenge you, take a few minutes today to set goals for the second half of 2016. BUT instead of making them tangible, achievable, and simple, 10x any goal you set. If nothing else, this will make you think BIG and force you to examine things you didn’t think were possible.
If you’re ready to reset your thinking on what’s possible, I want to give you a heads up. Coming up later this month, I’m leading a totally free coaching group to reboot your fitness & lifestyle. The Fitness & Lifestyle Reboot starts on Monday, June 20.
